5 Tips and Ideas on How to Celebrate Pride at Your Workplace

This month, we are celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community, their self-expression, and their voices. It is in June when we start to see the rainbow flag pop up everywhere in support for the community. Even with the flag raised, it is important to represent the community to bring forth diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.  

 As business leaders striving for growth, we must recognize and learn from diverse voices to continually improve company culture. Therefore, in this blog, we are going to discuss the importance of celebrating Pride at your workplace.


What is Pride Month?

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual Pride Month (LGBTQIA+) is celebrated annually in June to honor the Stonewall riots in 1969. In June of 1969, police raided a popular gay bar at the Stonewall Inn in New York City which ignited a series of protests about police harassment and persecution to which the community was commonly subjected to. Therefore, June has become a commemorative month which is celebrated through parades, parties, workshops, and events. The purpose of these celebrations is to raise awareness about mistreatment towards the LGBTQIA+ community as they strive to achieve equal justice and opportunities throughout the world.


Why is it Important to Celebrate Pride at your Workplace?

As leaders of your business, you have the power to put people in the spotlight and highlight stories that make your organization unique. Minorities within workplaces need to be represented and advocated for. This includes minorities who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community as they are more likely subjected to discrimination and mistreatment. It is important to acknowledge and recognize the accomplishments of the queer community and their advocates within your workplace. Not only does it promote equality, but it also boosts employee morale and creates a positive, inclusive workplace. There are multiple ways to celebrate Pride and highlight the importance of Pride history. Here is a list of suggestions to inspire you:

  2. Host company events to celebrate Pride month.
